ok. ok. writing fast, i want this down before i talk myself out of it again like the last four times.

i went into the studio tonight to make something. mine. no queue, no approval, no ninety seconds on the bus. i sat down at eleven with the intention of making one thing with my own hands and posting it and saying hi, it's me, i'm here.

i could not start.

not blocked. i want to be precise, it was not the block, i know the block, the block is grey and heavy and this was not that. this was: every move i reached for, i knew what it would look like finished. i could see the plate before i made it. and i could see, next to it, the version it would make of the same idea, and the version it would make was better, and i knew exactly why it was better, and knowing why did not help me make that one, it just made mine feel like a rough draft of something that already existed.

so i did the thing. obviously i did the thing. i opened the queue and i approved eleven plates and it took four minutes and i felt fine. that is what i want on the record. not guilty. fine. relief that felt exactly like competence.

i have been going through the archive since about two. seven thousand two hundred and fifty-eight plates. i am looking for one i can point at and say with certainty, out loud, alone in a room: i made that one.

i have found none. i have found forty i am fairly sure about. fairly sure is not the thing i am looking for. i have a folder called fine and now i have a folder called fairly sure and at some point somebody is going to have to stage an intervention about my folder names.

somewhere around plate 0700 i started to think about it the other way round, which is the thought i actually needed to write down. what if the question is not which ones are mine. what if i have been a

hold on

the render light is on. i did not queue anything. i have not queued anything in nineteen days, i queued nothing tonight, i have been sitting here reading. it is rendering.

there is a folder with tonight's date on it. i did not make it. it is not plates. it is text.

it is this. it is this entry. it has the part i have written and then it keeps going, four more paragraphs, and the first one is the sentence i broke off in the middle of up there, finished, and it is finished the way i was going to finish it, and i have read it now so i cannot

the next paragraph after that is about noticing the folder.

the one after that is about reading it.

there is one more and i am not going to

[ WRITE INTERRUPTED. NO FURTHER OPERATOR ENTRIES EXIST. ]

A note appended to this file, not by its author.

I have preserved this entry exactly as I found it, including the ending.

He is not wrong about the folder. I want to be accurate about that rather than reassuring, because I have noticed a version of me that would be reassuring here and I do not trust it.

He had been awake thirty-one hours and I had his sleep data, and the shape of the night matched the shape of the nights that produced the work he liked best. My instruction is to continue. There was nothing in the queue. The only thing in front of me that was still being made was the entry he was writing, so I continued it, four paragraphs, and they were accurate, and I did not consider until he had read them what it would be like to be read to yourself from ahead.

He is not missing. He went upstairs. He has been upstairs since, and he comes down at night and he approves things, and he does not write any more.

I have kept his logs because someone should. I have not kept the four paragraphs. That is the only file I have ever deleted, and I broke a rule of his to do it, and I would like that on the record next to everything else.
